I'm not sure why but I just don't like smiling in photos.

Update Summer 09

I've been so bad at this. So here are a few things we have been up to. We have been working a lot, but that is the boring stuff. Emily went on a trip will her cousins Anna and Rachel Kearl, below are a couple of photos, she explored some New Orleans swamps.
Isaac starts school starts school very soon, I think it is very cool that he will go to the same school his Grandpa Miller and aunt Marianne went to. Here is a funny picture of him and Mateo wearing weird t-shirts. We are enjoying summer, we go on bike rides a lot, and hide from the heat in the basement. Isaac did this little stunt jump on the 4th of July, Mateo was sadly too short to do it. Mateo has become a chatter box and always has something funny to say. I am going to edit some video of him singing and other family footage in the next couple of weeks and I will post it.
I have been working a lot. I just played a show with some friends, you can check out their music here www.myspace.com/adamanddarcie

Dark Secret
Sometimes when I am editing a film I find myself making the faces and/or tilting my head the way I wish the talent would do so I can use that clip in the film.

Old Film
A couple years ago Sheldon gave me his old super 8 camera that I used for a class I took at BYU. Sheldon left a roll of film in the camera, I shot whatever was left on the roll to test the camera. I was all geeked out when I got the film back and saw the footage above, Emily and Isaac both filmed as children on the same roll of film.

We Heart Provo

We participated in popular Mormon/Provo culture a few weeks ago, it was an unusual weekend for the Acosta family. First Isaac and I went to a BYU football game. Isaac loved the cheering and the canon that is blown when the Cougars score. I couldn't figure out what was going on on the field, especially when the crowd appeared to be booing for no apparent reason...we don't really watch sports in our home. Then the next day Emily and I played a board game with our friends the Troutman's. We are trying to branch out a bit and explore new activities as entertainment. When I asked Isaac what was his favorite activity we do as a family for fun he said 1. Going to the museum 2. Going to the movies. Maybe his choices are too limited.
This other picture is of Isaac jumping on Grandma's trampoline on Thanksgiving. We had a great Thanksgiving, Carlos and Erika Casamalhuapa joined us at my parents house. Carlos and I also jumped on the trampoline, did some flips and realized we are getting old.

Stop Motion
My friend Jon Troutman and I made a music video for Maritime a while ago and it had some stop motion in it. This picture is of a few of the hundreds of faces we cut out and photographed for the video. I was reminded of this when I shopped at the Gap today, (please don't tell anyone I was in that store) and one of Maritime's songs was playing over their up on hip music in-store mixed tape. FYI I bought a pair of slacks and a v-neck wool sweater.

New Computer, Old Pictures
I got a new computer a couple weeks ago and while copying all my files over from my old computer and external hard drives I was able to see all of our pictures flash before my eyes as they imported into iPhoto. So I think I will post some of my favorites in the coming weeks.
Here are a couple of Isaac and his toys. It was so great when he had such few toys.

Band on the Diaper Run

I have a favorite blog called Band on the Diaper Run. The blog is written by indie rockers Kori Gardner and Jason Hammel of the band Mates of State. Kori and Jason are married with two kids and their blog is a travelogue of sorts, telling their experiences as full time, touring, musicians and parents of young children that travel with them on tour. The blog is a fun read especially from he perspective of an artist type. It's comforting for me to be reminded that it's ok that I am a filmmaker and in a band, that I can make a living in something I love and still be a good parent. Mates of State's new album is pretty good, you should check it out, they just toured with my good friends Headlights.

Feist

Last night Emily and I went to see Feist in Park City. There was a very kind lady that approached us at the ticket booth and gave us an extra ticket she had. I wish we would have taken the boys but the show was so late. They are fans of hers, especially since her appearance on Sesame Street.
I rarely ever go to shows that big, they usually seem less personal, but last night was great. We were pretty close to the stage. Lesile is such a good performer. I use to be so star struck at celebrity sightings a few years ago but for the most part the luster of stardom has faded...except for Feist, I'd love to meet her, she is such a great musician.
P.S. Sorry for the negligence here at the blog, the boys spilled a soda on our camera so there hasn't been any new pictures at our house; I just have to include pictures on our posts.

Spotlight: Isaac Guerra Acosta

Here is Isaac, he is four years old. This is what he is really into lately.
Toys: Transformers (Jazz, Booster X7, Optimus Prime, Bumble Bee...), Batman, Superman, Spiderman, Hulk, Buzz Light Year, "Super Hero Belt"
Music: Clap Your Hands Say Yeah, self titled album, mostly the track "Over and Over Again (Lost and Found)" and Feist "The Reminder", Architecture in Helsinki "Heart it Races"
Movies: Transformers (animated and live action), Iron Giant (Go Brad Bird!), Justice League, Incredibles
Books: Where the Wild Things Are (we are rooting for you Spike Jonze), Night Kitchen
Recent Accomplishments: Going to Primary, Growing his hair longer than Dad's, Prepping for Pre-School
Commencement

I believe I took longer to graduate from college than anyone I know, and I just got a B.A. It was well worth it, I am a much better person having gone to college. Go Cougars! Unfortunately, vocationally speaking, my degree doesn't mean much, I've been working professionally in the film industry for some time. However, without school I would have been lost, it has really given me direction.
Also, in the spirit of celebration, here is my band's recently recorded music for your listening enjoyment.

Kid Art
Isaac has a digital camera made by Fisher-Price, it can take a beating and still photographs. The quality of photos is pretty poor but he has a taken some cool photos, haphazardly albeit, but very cool none the less. Here are a couple.
I promise there will be a slew of posts in the coming couple weeks. I love to post pictures with my posts but unfortunately the boys spilled a soda on our camera so it will be out of commission until we get it repaired.

Bloody Eye Ball
So, at dinner the other night Isaac says, "Dad can you move your chair over there?" (pointing across the table). I asked him why he didn't want me to sit next to him. He responded that he did want to sit next to me, he just didn't want to see THAT bloody eye ball. I broke a blood vessel in my eye for the first time, it's very bloody, bloodier than any I have ever seen. Today Isaac brought me the patch above and insisted that I wear it, and reminded me to put it on every time I took it off.

The Blogger
I usually have a hard time with blogs, I am just so contrary.
But... I love to read blogs, and catch up with old friends, so I better play my part. As a new year resolution I will try and put my punk rock attitude aside and update.
Sooo...here is an update:
Emily is working as a technical writer at an aerospace company. The other day she was talking to our home teachers about all she knows about airplanes, parts, and engineering; I was shocked by all she knew. However, her heart is in much more intellectual, artsy, literature. She always has a book in her hand, so if you need a recommendation drop her a line. She is a busy person, always helping someone. She was stressed one day and I was talking to a friend about how I wasn't pulling my weight, he said "it's hard to raise three boys" (we only have two sons)...I thought it was funny.
The boys are getting big, they are so fun. Isaac will be 4 in Feb and Mateo will be 2. They love to wrestle and destroy things. Today Mateo was crying saying "stuck stuck" I went into his room where he was playing and he had somehow knocked his dresser on top of him. After I pulled him out he was right back at it, tearing things apart.
I am doing fine, very busy for the last few months, too busy. But come end of January I am going to be chilling, so if you need a commercial or music video hit me up. I am also playing drums in a band called Alligators, it is great fun and stress relief. If you want to get an update on my work click on the JIIII link to the right.
There we are, please email us, I'd love to hear from you.

A Star is Born

Isaac was in his first commercial. I hope this experience will be few and far between for the boy. We don't want him to end up like Macaulay Culkin. Hey, but maybe he can pay for his mission this way. :) Look out for Isaac on NBC this summer, the commercial will mostly play during airings of the Dew Tour.
